Empirical began as Empirical Testing Corp. in Cleveland in 1998. What began as a single company with one employee testing medical devices has grown into Empirical Testing Corp., Empirical Consulting and Empirical Machine — a family of businesses that offers the full range of medical device testing, consulting, manufacturing and other services that client companies need to turn their brilliant ideas into medical breakthroughs.

Dawn Lissy, president of Empirical, had worked developing new medical devices and noted the few options available for mechanical testing, a crucial step in gaining regulatory approval. She started Empirical Testing, and in 1999, Lissy brought on her husband, Chris.

In 2004, the Lissys relocated to Colorado Springs, Colo. At the time, 10,000 square feet and four employees handled the workload at Empirical. Today, that space has doubled, and 25 people now work for the three Empirical companies.
